Matthew 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house

After a long day at work, I drove home tired with Treasure fuming at me for making us go home late as usual. Not even my apology could make her pity me because I offer the same apology and story everyday and yet the next day same thing happens again. Anyways as we made way into our apartment, we found our way through the darkness and while she collapsed into the couch, I made my way to the room looking for the lamp. I searched the rooms then the living room, then the dinning and the kitchen but could not find the lamp. I knew better than to ask Treasure at that time about it so I just let her be. I eventually got her phone and used the flashlight to search for the lamp. There it was; right beside the bed, the same place I had searched before.  As I picked it up and made a way to the kitchen to make some noodles for dinner, I wondered at the thought of the lamp been there in the room yet I walked in darkness. The lamp had the capacity to light up the room but it was off. Its presence in the room made little or no relevance for as long as it was off.

Colossians 1:9-14

For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously
giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

As I pondered on, I asked myself how many folks like the lamp are out there sitting in rooms and yet we still grapple with so much darkness all around. The bible describes us as the light of the world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden but I wonder at how many of us are out there carrying the light in us but not shinning it around. Too many of us have burdens and baggages, some of us have struggled with despair and crashing self confidence. A whole lot had questioned their ability to bring enough illumination to a darkened world; we have conformed to the environment so much that we have become convenient with the darkness around. We have gotten to the point of learned helplessness where we know there is a problem but we feel there is nothing much we can do about it.

When God conferred on us the responsibility to be light to this world, am sure He knew that we all will have our own fair share of battles to fight, burdens to bear, emotions to grapple with, sick babies to nurse or job deadlines to meet. Yet He still counts on us to turn the “on” button and be the light in our world. He is not expecting that we of ourselves generate the light but He has given us the blessing of His fellowship and presence to daily come and get inspired, refreshed and encouraged then go out there and be the light.  God knows about the pay rise you need. He is very concerned about that business contract or the job application. He is aware grandma wants a grandchild to nurse or that you need a man to call your own. While He is sorting that, He is asking that we bring illumination to our world. That we be His channel to bring light, ideas, concepts, insights, directions ad instructions to this world. He is expecting that I be the channel for Him to reach someone who hasn’t spoken to Him in a long while and bring His counsel to such person. Will I let Him through by turning on the power button or I would wallow in despair waiting for my next pay check rise,

Acts 13:47

Hey! we have got to quit playing church and get out there and get busy. There are so many pulpits rising up these days. Everyone with their own interpretation of the scriptures and we all bickering at one another for supremacy of revelation when there are empty pulpits in the military, in the sick wards, in the prison service, in the police, at the Electricity Company, in colleges, at the old people’s home and in different sectors and levels of government. I don’t need another pulpit Pastor Archbishop Sir; I need another man who will turn up the light in the prison service and other military and defense formations. Our world yearns for another lady at the financial crimes commission who vows not to just be at her desk and work like she s doing the country a favor but that she will be at her desk on time and discharge her duties with integrity and dedication. My community would do with another man who would be our light at the Electricity Distribution Company and will be faithful to give us correct billings, be prompt to resolve our electrical faults and be fair not to collect a bribe to give the next community more electricity ration than my side of town. It is very easy to play church and form holier than thou, but sir except if you are called into full time ministry please close the church door after service on Sunday and get into business and show the world how to treat customers fairly and make profits without cheating. Be another light in our Business world sir. Where are the doctors who would stand for righteousness and be our light in the health sector? Do we have lawyers and judges who know God enough to uphold His truth and yet defend our nation’s judiciary? Where is the lecturer; who will insist my daughter is granted admission because she merits it and not because I can pay my way through and will ensure he pokes my neighbor’s cousin’s brains and not her body.

How useful are those messages we preach on Sundays if all that happens is to feed people’s spirits and it doesn’t translate to tangible results in the activities on the earth. No better government and systems, no better businesses, and no recovering standards and yet we play church on Sunday and just wait for heaven to happen someday. God sure knows what He was doing when he asked that we be the light of the world and the salt of the earth! Not of heaven! So He expects us to contribute actively to the advancement of this earth and the immediate world around us. It doesn’t mean we have lost sight of heaven, it only mean we are earthly relevant yet heaven bound! It is irresponsibility before God that we carry His spirit and grace and yet our government is not influenced by what we know, our schools, prisons, businesses, police, military, hospitals, organizations and systems and other areas of life are devoid of the impact that the Holy spirit; the spirit of truth and excellence can make in our world. We have got to turn up the light. We know too much to be silent except if we are saying we haven’t met with the power of His Spirit.

The darkness in our society is an opportunity to shine the light of God in our generation. This darkness is useful. It makes the light shine so bright. But how useless is this light if we all just gather in church on Sunday and our world continues in darkness.

Useful darkness and useless light…

2 Corinthians 4:3-6

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake.
For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
