Foursquare encourages next-gen leadership in Nigeria
The 11th Annual Public Lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, themed “Leadership in Nigeria and Its Impact on the Next Generation,” gathered prominent leaders and dignitaries to explore the vital role leadership plays in shaping the country’s future. The event, which was held on Tuesday 8th October at the National Headquarters of the Church and hosted by Rev. Dr. Sam Aboyeji, General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church, brought together key figures from various sectors, including governance, business, and education.
The Public Lecture was monitored online by Ayodele Anointing a media Intern with WiGRadio.
The General Overseer, Rev. Dr. Sam Aboyeji, emphasized Foursquare’s commitment to national development and the significance of strong leadership in every sphere of society. He noted that with youth comprising 70% of Nigeria’s population, it is essential to address the challenges that hinder their full potential. He urged leaders to support the next generation, free from stereotypes and limitations, and extended an invitation to the 69th General Convention, set for November 11-17, 2024, at the Foursquare Camp Ground.
In his welcome speech, Rev. Roland Okereke, Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee and District Overseer of Alaka District, set the tone by stressing the importance of leaving a legacy that will positively impact future generations. Drawing from Romans 9:16 and Proverbs 13:22, he urged leaders to embody wisdom, integrity, and values that would leave a meaningful inheritance for the next generation.
The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, spoke on the leadership crisis in Nigeria, describing it as a “major problem.” He advocated for leadership to be taught not only as a tool for public office but as a skill for all citizens. He proposed the integration of leadership training into school curricula, with a focus on accountability, responsibility, and ethical values from a young age.
The keynote speaker, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, a leading Nigerian businesswoman and motivational speaker, delivered a powerful address on the role of ethical leadership. She highlighted the responsibility of current leaders to mentor and inspire future leaders by embracing integrity, innovation, and community empowerment. Her message reinforced the event’s core message: principled leadership is essential to navigate the complex challenges facing Nigeria.
The event was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including Ekiti State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Deacon Niyi Adebayo, Barrister Bimbola Salu Odeyin representing the Governor of Lagos State, Senator Dr. Bode Olajumoko, District Overseers in Foursquare including the Northern Regional Coordinator, Prof. James Jacob, and Rev. Dr. Jerry Oyegoke, alongside representatives from prestigious educational institutions such as Trinity University, McPherson University, and Covenant University.
The Annual Public Lecture reinforced the need for leadership that prioritizes future generations. The collective presence of government officials, business leaders, and educators underscored a shared commitment to raising ethical leaders who will shape a prosperous Nigeria.
As the discussions concluded, it became evident that Nigeria’s future depends on nurturing the next generation with strong leadership skills and values that will stand the test of time.
