A pioneering initiative aimed at enriching the skills and exposure of student journalists from various higher learning institutions has been launched in Lagos. WiGRadio, Nigeria’s premier online radio platform, has taken the lead in this collaborative Internship Exchange Program, partnering with the Media Career Development Network (MCDN), and New Dawn Nigeria (NewDawngr.com). The program offers student journalists a unique opportunity to gain multimedia experience across diverse media organizations.
The program was officially inaugurated on Tuesday 26th September 2023 in Lagos and saw enthusiastic participation from interns representing numerous universities and polytechnics nationwide.
Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network (MCDN), outlined the program’s vision. It aims to empower interns within collaborating media organizations with skills and resources that go beyond conventional internships. The program includes joint training sessions, reciprocal visits, and mutual learning opportunities for the interns.
“Recognizing the challenges faced by interns in securing placements in their preferred media organizations and receiving comprehensive training, our mission is to provide them with a holistic experience that encompasses the entire media landscape,” Otufodunrin explained.
Moreover, students will have the unique opportunity to publish and broadcast their content on WiGRadio’s influential platforms, greatly expanding their reach and influence. Otufodunrin also unveiled ambitious plans for international collaborations with organizations abroad, offering interns the prospect of gaining global exposure and experience.
He encouraged interns to seize these exceptional opportunities, emphasizing that the skills acquired during their internships would significantly enhance their readiness for the industry upon graduation.
Notably, during the launch event, the CEO of WiGRadio, Mr. Olawale Perfect, shared his inspiring journey of starting one of Nigeria’s foremost online radio platforms with just Two hundred naira. His success story served as a source of motivation for the aspiring young journalists in attendance.
