Bible Study by Pastor Gbenga Samson.

Father we thank you for another wonderful evening like this. We say be exalted in Jesus name.

As we go to learn, father teach us yourself and make a person at the end of it in Jesus name. Amen.
Ruling Over Your Spirit

Proverbs 25:28 NJKV

[28]Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.

Proverbs 25:28 NLT

[28]A person without self-control

is like a city with broken-down walls.
Having no rule of your spirit is lacking self control.

From a Spiritual perspective, Self Control is actually Spirit Control.
It is empowering your Spirit over the flesh by submitting to The Word, Will and Way of God.

When we talk about self control we usually emphasize discipline which is what it is about.

But we must not miss the fact that discipline is a function of whose disciple you are.

You discipline yourself based on what you have been discipled in and who you have been discipled by.

Jesus did not mince words in

Luke 9:23-25
[23]Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

[24]For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.

[25]For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?

While the world preaches their gospel of Self Love, the Bible preaches the Gospel of submission to The Lordship of Christ and THE will of the Father.

Now I apologise in advance for certain toes I am about to step on.
I am sure some of you will be disappointed if I just did this and stepped on no toes.

You would be wondering whether I have backslidden.

So let me not disappoint you 😉….

Self Love as the world teaches it is wrong.
Self love is not the foundation of real love.
Jesus said

John 14:27

[27]Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
There is a peace that the world gives.

Don’t fall for it!
That peace is a fake kind of peace.

It is having peace with yourself which will contradict with having peace with God.
Homosexualism and the transgender issue arose from self love.
I know someone is wondering, where did Gbenga get that from.
But the truth is they did.
You see once self love is the focus there will be an eventual loss of self control.
You will be so focused on pleasing yourself you will go against others and God.
To tackle the issue of self love the bible made it clear in Luke 10 that we should love our neighbour as ourselves.
BUT in Luke 10 the love of God is put first and then the love of beighbour as ourselves is brought up.
This is because if we don’t Love God fully and truly we will be incapable of loving our neighbours and loving ourselves.
Loving God must come before self love.
Now don’t me wrong there is a positive side to self lovem I am not blind to that.
I am just warning us to be weary of falling for the Devil’s trap because the way that’s seems right may end in destruction.

To love yourself properly, you put God first.
And you must be content with how God has made you.
You must be content in being who God has purposed you to be.

So loving yourself properly actually is an offshoot of loving God.

Jesus is clear about it in Luke 14:26-27

[26]“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

[27]And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

Anyone who truly follows Him would seem to hate himself not because God preaches hate but because loving and following God will make you make decisions that will have people thinking you hate yourself and the people who love you.
Being Christ’s disciple is the real discipline.

This kind of discipline has you prioritizing God above family, friends, and self.

Ruling over your Spirit therefore demands;
YOU
Deny Yourself

Take UP your Cross

AND

Follow Christ. Luke 9:23-25.
Denying Yourself.
This is about not putting yourself first.
There can be no real self control as long as you keep putting yourself first.
Saying No to self and Yes to God when there is a clash of wills is what makes a true disciple.

That discipline is built over time but it starts with surrender and ends in submission to the authority of Christ as Lord over your life.

You must come to the conclusion that you are too foolish to determine the course of your life and see God’s wisdom as superior as always.
It will cost you a lot.
As your mates will seem to leave you behind.
But you must stop comparing yourself to others.
Denying yourself is to stop the normal human habits of comparison and competition.

Self thrives on these things but having rule over your Spirit implies you must mot flow with the dictates of the flesh.

You must learn to deny yourself of of what pleases men but displeases God.
Taking Up Your Cross.
When you deny yourself, you seem to live a disadvantaged life. This will be a cross you are to carry.
The seeming disadvantage of not following the crowd.
The disadvantage of standing out is you will be noticed and possibly bullied.
You will be called an Alaseju (one who oversees stuff).
That is a cross you are to bear.

People will mock you on that cross but God will be glorified on that cross.

He will use you to do exploits.

He will use that disadvantage and make it an advantage.
When He does it,people will know you were not using their normal ways and they will give God the Glory.

Taking up your cross is not a shameful thing.
It is a Glorious thing.
There is Grace for the cross.

Yes you will be overwhelmed as you make the journey but God will send help.
Jesus did not carry his cross alone, when He was overwhelmed, help came.

Matthew 27:31-32

[31]And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
[32]Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.

God will compel helpers to help you in this journey.

Be open to Godly helpers to help you rule over your Spirit.

Self control cannot be accomplished alone, you need help.

Pastors, teachers, friends, books etc,God will bring your way, let them be of great use to you in your spiritual journey but idoloze none of them.
Following Christ.
Your eyes must be on Christ

Not on helpers that help with the cross Or those you even want to help.

But on Christ.

If you focus on helpers, you will discover helpers also become overwhelmed over time.

If you focus on those you are sent to help, you will discover that all your help may seem not to be helping at times and you will become discouraged.
But if you focus on Christ, you will never lack help and your helping others will not be in vain.

Following Christ is making Him not just your Lord but your role model.
His life informs how you live your life.
You make decisions with the mind of Christ.
Phil 2:5

Let This Mind Be In YOU which was also on Christ Jesus …
The mind of Christ does not see anything as too low or too high, it has the :I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me” mindset.
This mindset helps you put your flesh under check.
It helps you eliminate excuses of too difficult to practice and too good to be true.
You flow with God like Christ did regardless of how you feel.
Following Christ has its highs and lows.
You will walk on water. You will sweat blood.
But God will always be there for you.

Let me add this…
Don’t let The Devil fool you even if you are struggling right now with self control, God has not abandoned you
Struggle is evidence you are still in the battle.
If you had given up you will stop struggling and start enjoying what is wrong

Romans 7:15-25

[15]For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.

[16]If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.

[17]But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

[18]For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

[19]For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.

[20]Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

[21]I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good.

[22]For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.

[23]But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

[24]O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

[25]I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

The struggle described above is a victorious struggle.
Don’t let The Devil fool you, you are a walk in progress.
But please do not settle for that struggle.
There is a higher calling.
There is a deeper life on Christ.
Submit yourself fully to Christ.
Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Christ.
No man who follows Christ can miss God’s perfect will for God or her life.

God will grant us the Grace to always put Him first and put His Deaires above ours always in Jesus Name.
Questions and Answers
Q1: And how can an individual gain the world when he doesn’t live by the principles that answer to making exploit in the world. 🤔
A: Gaining the world is not something a believer targets . It is actually a reward that should be added to you. It is not about competing with the world.
It is while seeking the kingdom and its righteousness that things like GAIN will be added to you.

When it happens that way, the world is drawn to your light as they see you don’t operate on their level and by their rules yet you don’t lack results.

In Matthew 4:4
Jesus pointed out that Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.

When the world sees that you are getting bread nourishment without the typical bread and are even faring better because of The Word of God you follow, you become a Glorious Light Of God.

Q2: Is there an healthy form of self love? There are people who do not love themselves and it result in low self esteem. Would that be healthy?

A: yes there is the healthy version.
We just have to be careful not to get carried away by focusing on self.

The healthy version puts God first and sees the flesh as a vehicle for expressions of The Spirit.
The healthy version sees value in the love of God.

The hearthy version …
– “God loves me so much He sent His son to die for me, I must not waste my life living aimlessly”.
– ” I am beautifully and wonderfully made to reflect The Glory of God not appeal to the lust of men”.
– ” God has invested so much in me,I must lift Him up and not let Him down”.
– ” God is counting on me to be his hands of love in a world of hate”.
But we must be very careful of the Devil’s trap because the way that’s seems right may end in destruction.
The Devil twists the focus on self to become selfishness and that throws us off the way of life.
To love yourself properly, you put God first.
And you must be content with how God has made you.
You must be content in being who God has purposed you to be.

So loving yourself properly actually is an offshoot of loving God.
Better put loving yourself properly actually is a product of Loving God dearly.
Focus on God and you will have the right esteem.
The God esteem.
“God has esteemed me highly, I refuse to put in the boxes of men”.
